The continental subsurface extends from a few meters below the surface to a few kilometers. Even at these great depths, microbial life survives. Microorganisms live in deep, ancient aquifers or in rocks (endolithic microorganisms). Their metabolisms and survival strategies remain poorly understood in these extremely difficult-to-access areas.
